Professor Martine Courant Rife, JD, PhD  [Readings and Required Books]   [Syllabus.pdf] [Prof. Rife's Bio]

Have you ever wondered about the ways in which law intersects writing, particularly digital writing? Have you ever created a text and wondered about the legality of using the materials you incorporated? Have you ever wanted to publish something, and wondered about how others might appropriate your writing and whether there was anything you could do to protect your rights as an author? Have you ever been asked to sign a contract, publishing or otherwise, and wondered exactly what all the language in that contract meant? Have you ever been asked to craft Terms of Use for a web space, list serve, or course management system and wondered about best practices? Have you ever wanted to start your own professional writing business, do writing/editing-for-money/hire and wondered exactly how to properly, ethically, and legally approach the situation? Have you ever wanted to create a publication, or publish the work of others, and wondered what kind of agreement you might need? Have you ever been curious about legal issues that might arise when digital writing created and published in one country, instantaneously becomes "published" in all countries?

If you answered YES to any of the above questions, this 16 week course may be of interest to you.
